Intro post
Hi! I'll be posting here about my career as a literary agent and other publishing stuff. I'm an infrequent blogger at best so it will probably just be agency news and announcements about my clients for the most part, but feel free to suggest other topics or ask me questions in the comments.

Colleen Lindsay plugged your blog, so I decided to check it out. Welcome to LJ! I look forward to reading your entries, and any advice you might have from working as an assistant agent at Writers House. :)

Welcome to live journal.

So I have a question. There are more and more agents blogging these days, many for many reasons. What are your reasons?

I also descended here due to a Swivet recommendation, to say hi, and -- quite shamelessly -- ask what format you prefer email queries in? Plain Text with underlining/italics indicated _like thus_ and spaces between paragraphs? Or HTML email (12-point Courier as a font), with paragraphs merely indicated by indenting? The Agent Query entry doesn't say, and I dither pathetically between which one would be less eyestrain on the reader.

Welcome to LJ - here from swivet, like many others. I love reading industry blogs, and I'm looking forward to adding yours to the list. :)

A lot of agents post query stats occasionally, and that's always fun. Anyway, welcome!

Hi Diana,

I have Colleen Lindsay's blog, The Swivet, on an RSS feed to one of my LJ accounts. I read her latest post about you joining the LJ community. Welcome!

As for topics to blog, would you consider ever posting about cover art? I'm curious as to what role, if any, an agent plays in a client's cover art. Do you act as intermediary at any point with the publishing house's design department when a cover is produced and there's disagreement on its subject, tone, etc.?

I recently saw a short video that author Marianne Mancusi produced where Dorchester Publishing gave a brief view into how they produced a cover for fantasy romance author C.L. Wilson. Loved it. I'd be interested in learning more about this aspect of book publishing from an agent's POV.

Welcome, and thanks again for your help composing my query letter for my gay romance a few months ago.

Best of luck with the agency.

Hi, Diana:

I got here from swivet, like everyone else. I ran right over to comment. I'm reading "Black Ships" right now and it's amazing! I'm in the NYU Publishing Institute and I'm supposed to turn in my thesis on Tuesday but it is distracting me!

Hi Diana,

I'm another Swivet reader. Welcome, expect lots of queries (most of us don't waste time), and have fun!

Topics to blog about: I like the agents who blog about their days and what they like or dislike about them. Little snippets of your favorite or most hated events give us clues as to what's happening in the industry. These are very helpful!

And since queries are a writer's nightmare (like playing darts blindfolded), I'd love to hear what you like or dislike about specific queries you receive. You don't necessarily have to publish them.

Anyway, welcome to the blogsphere! Time to go back to work!

Welcome!

I'm rather new to the whole agent/publishing thing, but I already LOVE agents who blog. I'm very excited to have a new agent blog to follow. :)

Your Agent Query entry mentions books that cross genres. Do you have any suggestions for pitching/marketing such novels? Prevailing wisdom seems to frown on novels that don't fit easily into a single category.
